The molecular structures of polysaccharides affect their reverse osmosis membrane fouling behaviors

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: This study found that the molecular structure rather than molecular weight of polysaccharides influenced the fouling behavior of reverse osmosis membranes. Branched-chain polysaccharides were more likely to cause severe membrane fouling and form thicker foulant layers on membrane surfaces compared to straight-chain polysaccharides. Additionally, the presence of Ca2+ had a significant impact on the fouling behavior of straight-chain acid polysaccharides but not on branched-chain polysaccharides or neutral polysaccharides.

The structural and functional properties of polysaccharide foulants in membrane fouling

Xianghao Meng et al.

Summary: The spatial configuration of polysaccharide foulant is significant in membrane fouling, controlling the resistance of gel layer formed on the membrane. Polysaccharides with different properties show distinct fouling mechanisms in accordance with Hermia's models. Cations may change the interaction of polysaccharide foulant, leading to structural changes in the gel layer.
