HPLC-UV, Metabarcoding and Genome Skims of Botanical Dietary Supplements: A Case Study in Echinacea

Sara M. Handy et al.

Summary: The use of DNA-based methods for authentication of botanical dietary supplements has sparked vigorous debate, with comparisons to chemical methods and discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Genome skimming has shown enhanced discriminatory capacity compared to traditional DNA barcoding methods, particularly in identifying closely related species within the Echinacea genus.

Metabolomics and DNA-Based Authentication of Two Traditional Asian Medicinal and Aromatic Species of Salvia subg. Perovskia

Monika Bielecka et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship and chemical composition differences between S. yangii and S. abrotanoides of the subgenus Perovskia using metabolomics and DNA barcoding. The results indicated differences in chemical components between the two, with DNA barcoding confirming them as closely related but distinct species. The combination of metabolomics and DNA authentication proved to be a powerful tool in identifying taxonomically close Salvia species.

Untargeted metabolomics and DNA barcoding for discrimination of Phyllanthus species

Kodsara Ramachandra Kiran et al.

Summary: This study integrated untargeted metabolomics and traditional phylogenetic analysis to identify species-specific metabolites for the discrimination of nine Phyllanthus species. The results showed distinct metabolite clusters in different species and led to the identification of unique metabolites and their abundance. Barcoding analysis using rpoC1 also contributed to species identification. The study demonstrated the potential of bioactive metabolites as biological signatures for therapeutic use, with differential expression of secondary metabolites among the Phyllanthus species.

Interlaboratory Comparison of Untargeted Mass Spectrometry Data Uncovers Underlying Causes for Variability

Trevor N. Clark et al.

Summary: Despite challenges in comparing untargeted metabolomics data between laboratories, this study found that data sets with low feature overlap can still yield similar qualitative descriptions using PCA. Differences in fragmentation, charge state, and adduct formation in the ionization source were identified as major factors causing discrepancies in the data sets.

Lipidomic and metabolomic profiles of Coffea canephora L. beans cultivated in Southwestern Nigeria

Chinyere F. Anagbogu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the lipid molecules of 30 genotypes of C. canephora through UPLC-MS profiling, identifying nine classes of lipids among them. Although differences were found among the lipid profiles of 'Niaouli', 'Kouillou', and 'Java Robusta' genotypes, multivariate analysis revealed greater similarity in their lipid composition. Members of the fatty acyls group were found to have the greatest power to discriminate among genotypes.

Authentication of the Botanical and Geographical Origin and Detection of Adulteration of Olive Oil Using Gas Chromatography, Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy Techniques: A Review

Eleni Kakouri et al.

Summary: Olive oil, with its high nutritional value, is prone to adulteration for economic reasons, raising concerns about authenticity. Various analytical techniques have been developed to detect and identify adulterated olive oils, ensuring their quality and authenticity. Infrared and Raman spectroscopy are discussed as candidate tools for examining authenticity, along with the use of volatile fractions as markers to distinguish between different varieties and adulterated oils.

Secondary Metabolites Extracted from Annonaceae and Chemotaxonomy Study of Terpenoids

Renata P. B. Menezes et al.

Summary: The Annonaceae family of plants is anatomically and structurally uniform, with diterpenes accounting for a significant portion of unique compounds. Self-organizing maps were used to analyze the chemical patterns within the family, showing clear tribe separations with a high match rate. These models can be utilized to predict the phylogenetic location of specific diterpenes, aiding in the research of Annonaceae secondary metabolites and their potential biological applications.
