Association between Metabolic Syndrome Components and Cardiac Autonomic Modulation among Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Rashmi Supriya et al.

Summary: The clustering of metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors is increasingly common in young people up to the age of 19, leading to the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The impact of MetS risk factors on cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) has been noted from childhood to adolescence, and understanding these associations can improve clinical outcomes even in the absence of visible MetS symptoms. This review examined the associations between CAM and MetS risk factors to identify significant correlations with heart rate variability (HRV) indices in young individuals. The results suggest that lipid profiles, waist circumference, and blood pressure are linked to CAM in young people, highlighting the importance of early screening and cardiovascular risk prediction in this age group.

Summary: The network meta-analysis and systematic review found that consumption of almond-enriched diets can reduce waist circumference compared to a control diet, but overall, the intake of tree nuts and peanuts does not significantly influence adiposity.
