Incorporating climate change in flood estimation guidance

Conrad Wasko et al.

Summary: Research on the implications of climate change on flood hazard has progressed significantly in the past decade, but efforts to translate this research into practical guidance for flood estimation are still in their early stages. Although climate science involves varying levels of uncertainty, many jurisdictions worldwide have started incorporating climate change into their flood guidance, signaling the need for more flexible design and planning approaches.

Climate change effects on indicators of high and low river flow across Great Britain

A. L. Kay et al.

Summary: Research suggests that in the future, there is generally a trend of decreasing low flows and increasing high flows in the UK. There is significant regional variation in these changes, with the south/east regions showing a more pronounced decrease in low flows. Significant variation within regions, likely related to catchment properties, has also been observed.

Uncertainty of potential evapotranspiration modelling in climate change impact studies on low flows in North America

Gabrielle Dallaire et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uncertainty in hydroclimatic modelling chain components on future changes in potential evapotranspiration and low flows in watersheds. Results show an increase in potential evapotranspiration and a decrease in low flows with climate change. The study recommends the use of multiple hydrological model-PET formula combinations to assess the impact of climate change on low flows.

Climate Change Impact on the Magnitude and Timing of Hydrological Extremes Across Great Britain

Rosanna A. A. Lane et al.

Summary: The study shows that by 2050-2080, there may be significant reductions in low flows and uncertain changes in high flows, with simultaneous decreases in low flows and increases in high flows projected in the west. Changes in flow timing are also expected, with earlier annual maximum flows in most of Scotland, later annual maximum flows in most of England and Wales, and later low flows across Great Britain.
