Regulating the circular economy within the ecodesign directive: Progress so far, methodological challenges and outlook

Davide Polverini

Summary: The policies related to the Circular Economy are currently being intensively implemented in the European Union with a central role attributed to the Ecodesign Directive. This paper analyzes the scope and expected impacts of Ecodesign requirements on material efficiency aspects at the EU level, identifies research priorities, and provides tools for policymakers to achieve more ambitious Circular Economy objectives. Regulatory approaches and areas for policy intervention are also devised to further enable Circular Economy goals within the framework of the Ecodesign Directive.

Life Cycle Assessment of various biorefinery approaches for the valorisation of almond shells

Leyre Sillero et al.

Summary: This study assessed the environmental impacts of converting almond shells into high added-value products through Life Cycle Assessment methodology, concluding that enzymatic hydrolysis had the highest environmental impacts. It was also found that the organosolv delignification process had a more negative overall impact. The best route for valorizing almond shells in a biorefinery facility should include autohydrolysis, alkaline delignification, bleaching, and acid hydrolysis steps.
