Critiques of the circular economy

Herve Corvellec et al.

Summary: Critiques addressed to the circular economy and circular business models focus on their diffused limits, unclear theoretical grounds, and structural obstacles. The sustainability value of the circular economy is uncertain compared to what its advocates claim.

Is artificial intelligence greening global supply chains? Exposing the political economy of environmental costs

Peter Dauvergne

Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to greatly enhance the productivity and efficiency of global supply chains, but it is not advancing sustainability as much as industry leaders claim. The metrics and rhetoric of corporate social responsibility are exaggerating the benefits of AI while overlooking its costs. AI's productivity and efficiency gains are leading to more production and consumption, benefiting big businesses more than the earth's sustainability. Additionally, AI is accelerating natural resource extraction and waste generation, causing harm to marginalized communities, fragile ecosystems, and future generations.

Reimagining the milk supply chain: Reusable vessels for bulk delivery

Tomasz Blazejewski et al.

Summary: The study compares a proposed milk supply chain using a mix of reusable stainless steel churns and reusable glass bottles with the current supply chain that uses single-use HDPE bottles, showing that greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced by implementing a reuse scheme. Considerable savings are also reported in categories such as water consumption, fossil resources depletion, and cumulative energy demand.

Redesigning Supply Chains using Blockchain-Enabled Circular Economy and COVID-19 Experiences

Santosh Nandi et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerabilities in the traditional patterns of production and consumption, calling for supply chains to become more resilient, transparent, and sustainable through localization, agility, and digitization. Blockchain technology and circular economy principles are seen as potential solutions, with use cases demonstrating their support for supply chain efforts.

Assessment of the environmental break-even point for deposit return systems through an LCA analysis of single-use and reusable cups

Dario Cottafava et al.

Summary: The study introduces a two-step methodology to compare the environmental impact of single-use and reusable cups, highlighting the environmental break-even points for different scenarios. Reusable plastic cups reach break-even points for climate change and non-renewable energy use at n < 150, while single-use PP cups perform better in terms of acidification, eutrophication, and water scarcity indicators.

Towards a circular economy for packaging waste by using new technologies: The case of large multinationals in emerging economies

Raji Ajwani-Ramchandani et al.

Summary: Earth's ability to sustain human life is at a critical point due to packaging waste, which large multinational enterprises often view separately from their products, leaving the responsibility to governments. Through in-depth analysis, it was found that urban groups have the desire and capability to address this issue with the right incentives and technology. By advancing a holistic framework based on incentives and new technologies, the circular economy theory is enhanced with a focus on a resources value loop in the product lifecycle theory.

Consumption Work in the circular economy: A research agenda

Kersty Hobson et al.

Summary: Circular Economy frameworks play a crucial role in reducing global resource use and environmental despoilment. However, challenges remain in making Circular Economy actionable, one of which is the emergence of the 'circular consumer' and the varied forms of Consumption Work required for success. Focusing on Consumption Work offers a different perspective on what it takes to be a circular consumer and the implications for Circular Economy success.

Blockchain for the Circular Economy: Analysis of the Research-Practice Gap

Alexa Boeckel et al.

Summary: Existing research suggests that the circular economy concept has great potential but also faces challenges, with blockchain technology viewed as a critical solution. However, there is a lack of clear terminology and understanding of the technical properties and benefits of different types of blockchain. Trust and verification are seen as major benefits but creating them poses a challenge, requiring a closer examination of the potential benefits and challenges of blockchain for the circular economy.

Corporate self-commitments to mitigate the global plastic crisis: Recycling rather than reduction and reuse

Sebastian Rhein et al.

Summary: An increasing number of companies are voluntarily committing to help complete the transition from a linear to a circular economy, but a critical analysis on whether these commitments can mitigate the plastic crisis and shape the transformation towards a circular economy is lacking. The study found that a uniform definition of the 3Rs is missing, and the concepts of reduction and reuse are mostly associated with recycling, hindering the rigorous implementation of a circular economy.

Nano and micro level circular economy indicators: Assisting decision-makers in circularity assessments

Carla Tognato de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The growing interest in Circular Economy has led to the development of assessment metrics, but there are still challenges in choosing the appropriate circularity indicators. Current focus is mainly on material and resource recovery strategies, with social impacts being addressed less frequently.

Collaborations for circular food packaging: The set-up and partner selection process

Joana Kleine Jager et al.

Summary: Over 40% of petroleum-based plastics are used for packaging, with half of that going to food packaging. However, about 95% of plastic packaging is lost to the economy after just one use cycle. The circular economy is seen as a solution, but implementation for circular food packaging faces challenges due to the need for extensive cross-chain collaboration.
