Plant Biomass and Soil Nutrients Mainly Explain the Variation of Soil Microbial Communities During Secondary Succession on the Loess Plateau

Miao-ping Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that herb communities, soil microbial biomass, and enzyme activities were strongly affected by vegetation restoration, with significant differences in soil bacterial and fungal communities among sites. Correlation analysis showed that litter biomass and fine root biomass were significantly positively correlated with the Chao index of soil bacteria, soil microbial biomass, enzyme activities, Proteobacteria, Zygomycota, and Cercozoa, while negatively correlated with Actinobacteria and Basidiomycota. Additionally, soil water content, pH, and nutrients had important effects on the bacterial and fungal diversities, with influences on Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Nitrospirae, Zygomycota, and microbial biomass.

Chengjie Ren et al.

Summary: The distribution patterns of microbial communities and enzyme activities in soil along an elevation gradient were studied, with results showing significant effects of elevation on bacterial, fungal, ectomycorrhizal, and saprotrophic fungal diversity, as well as enzyme activity dynamics. Climatic factors and soil properties played important roles in these differences, with climatic factors having a greater impact along the elevation gradient. These findings highlight the ecological importance of microbial communities in response to climate change.

Converting croplands to orchards changes soil microbial community composition and co-occurrence patterns

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: Converting croplands to orchards significantly alters microbial community composition and functionality, reducing the complexity of interactions between microorganisms. Soil organic carbon content and C:N ratio in orchards are significantly lower compared to croplands. Improved management practices are necessary to maintain soil biodiversity and organic carbon content in orchards to prevent soil degradation and ensure sustainable development.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Communities in the Soils of Desert Habitats

Martti Vasar et al.

Summary: Deserts cover a significant portion of the Earth's surface and continue to expand, with AM fungi playing a crucial role in plant survival in drought stressed environments. The diversity of AM fungi in different desert regions varies, with geographical and ecological factors influencing their community structures. Nonrandom assembly processes, such as habitat filtering, may have contributed to shaping desert fungal assemblages.

Summary: This study found that seasonal variation has significant impacts on forest soil AM fungal communities, with forest type, soil pH, microbial biomass, and nitrogen, phosphorus content being significantly affected by seasonal changes. Diversity indices of mixed forest varied across different seasons, and the co-occurrence network and keystone taxa among AM fungi can change in response to environmental filtering due to mixed management in different seasons.

Diminished rhizosphere and bulk soil microbial abundance and diversity across succession stages in Karst area, southwest China

Huifang Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that as vegetation succession stages increased, the abundance and diversity of microbial communities in both rhizosphere and bulk soils decreased. Soil organic carbon (SOC) may lead to higher microbial abundance in grassland and shrubland during the primary succession stages, while available phosphorus (AP) may result in lower abundance of microbes in secondary forest and primary forest during subsequent succession stages. The composition of bacteria and fungi in different succession stages was found to be similar, with pH possibly playing a key role in driving this similarity.

Summary: This study investigated the biogeographic patterns and co-occurrence networks of diazotrophic and AMF communities in acidic soil ecosystems. Soil physicochemical factors were found to have a significant impact on microbial community structures, while geographic distance primarily affected variations in the diazotrophic community. The dominant genera Bradyrhizbium and Glomus were identified as important keystone taxa in the diazotrophic and AMF networks.

Haiyun Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated changes in vegetation, soil physicochemical properties, and soil microbial community in three degradation levels of alpine meadows in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Results showed that as degradation increased, plant cover decreased, soil nutrients declined, and soil pH increased. Alpine meadow degradation significantly altered the composition of soil microbial communities but did not impact microbial diversity.

Alterations in Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Community Along a Chronosequence of Teak (Tectona grandis) Plantations in Tropical Forests of China

Zhi Yu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the responses of AM fungal communities in rhizosphere soils and roots to different stand ages of teak plantations and found that with increasing stand age, AM fungal colonization rates and spore density increased linearly. Changes in soil properties largely explained the alterations in the structure of the AM fungal community, while soil AM fungal community diversity was significantly higher than that in the roots. Soil nutrient availability and enzyme activity were identified as the main driving factors regulating the shift in the AM fungal community structure along a chronosequence of the teak plantations.

Dynamic changes of soil microbial community in Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica plantations in the Mu Us Sandy Land

Boyuan Bi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dynamic changes of soil microbial communities during the growth of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolic plantations in desertification environments. The results showed that soil microbial alpha diversity and community structure were influenced by stand age, with available phosphorus and total phosphorus being significant factors. Soil moisture had no significant effect on the microbial community. pH and available nitrogen had the largest positive total effects on bacterial and fungal community, respectively. Stand age indirectly had the largest negative total effects on the bacterial community. Therefore, phosphorus utilization efficiency played a key role in shaping the soil microbial community during the natural restoration process of Pinus sylvestris plantations in desertification environments.
