Introgression of QTLs for Drought Tolerance into Farmers' Preferred Sorghum Varieties

Andekelile Mwamahonje et al.

Summary: The study successfully improved the stay-green characteristics of farmer-preferred sorghum varieties in Tanzania through marker-assisted backcrossing, with favorable alleles observed at 18 loci in BC2F1 populations. The highest yield was observed in the B35*NACO Mtama 1 background population in the BC2F1 generation.

Adaptation Responses to Early Drought Stress of West Africa Sorghum Varieties

Boubacar Gano et al.

Summary: Sorghum is a major cereal crop in the Sahel region, but often faces early-stage water deficit due to false onsets of rainy seasons. This study assessed the effects of early drought stress on ten elite sorghum varieties in Senegal, revealing significant impacts on plant growth and identifying promising varieties for further breeding and farming in West Africa.

Evaluation of Traits' Performance Contributing to Drought Tolerance in Sorghum

Andekelile Mwamahonje et al.

Summary: Sorghum is an important food crop in semi-arid Africa, but is affected by drought. This study identified traits contributing to drought tolerance in sorghum genotypes, with SE438 showing the highest grain yield in water-stressed environment and NA316C yielding highest under well-watered conditions, indicating sensitivity of sorghum to water availability.

Morphological and biochemical responses of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench under drought stress

Assad Sarshad et al.

Summary: The study showed that drought stress negatively impacted morphological and yield-related traits of sorghum, while having a positive effect on some quality-related traits. Different levels of drought stress led to varying degrees of reduction in sorghum yield. The Payam variety was found to be suitable for both drought stress and non-stress conditions, based on different traits and indices.
