Human papillomaviruses: diversity, infection and host interactions

Alison A. McBride

Summary: HPVs are a diverse group of viruses that replicate in specific anatomical niches of the stratified epithelia. Most infections are asymptomatic, but some can cause benign proliferative lesions or even cancer. These viruses have evolved to evade the host immune system and manipulate cellular processes to ensure their survival and replication.

Transcriptomic Analyses Reveal Gene Expression Profiles and Networks in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Yaqi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study identified 34 genes that are significantly differentially expressed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), with immune response and regulation of cell proliferation being the most enriched biological GO terms. Experimental validation showed that some genes were upregulated while others were downregulated in NPC tissue samples. This information may lead to potential druggable targets and biomarkers for diagnosing and evaluating the prognosis of NPC.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

The long and winding road: human papillomavirus entry and subcellular trafficking

Michelle A. Ozbun et al.

Summary: HPV infects and replicates in differentiating mucosal and cutaneous epithelium. Most infections are asymptomatic, but persistent infections by oncogenic types can progress to cancer. HPV particles interact with host proteins during infectious entry into keratinocytes, leading to uncoating of the viral genome and eventual transcription in the nucleus.

Epstein-Barr Virus Lytic Replication Induces ACE2 Expression and Enhances SARS-CoV-2 Pseudotyped Virus Entry in Epithelial Cells

Dinesh Verma et al.

Summary: Understanding the factors that affect the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial in combating COVID-19. This study showed that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection induced ACE2 expression in epithelial cells, increasing susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2. The EBV transcriptional activator Zta directly activated the ACE2 promoter, and inhibiting EBV replication may reduce susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2.

Co-expression of low-risk HPV E6/E7 and EBV LMP-1 leads to precancerous lesions by DNA damage

Karina Uehara et al.

Summary: Co-expression of low-risk HPV E6/E7 and EBV LMP-1 does not lead to malignant transformation, but it does result in increased cell proliferation, elevated NF-kappa B activity, reduced p53 induction, DNA damage, and suppression of DNA damage response. This double infection may potentially lead to precancerous lesions.
