Transplantation of viable mitochondria improves right ventricular performance and pulmonary artery remodeling in rats with pulmonary arterial hypertension

Chih-Hsin Hsu et al.

Summary: This study found that transplantation of viable mitochondria can reverse vascular and cardiac structural and functional damage in rats with pulmonary hypertension. By improving the contractile ability of the pulmonary artery and inhibiting abnormal proliferation, mitochondrial transplantation may be a revolutionary approach for treating pulmonary hypertension.

Mitochondrial Arrest on the Microtubule Highway-A Feature of Heart Failure and Diabetic Cardiomyopathy?

Sarah Kassab et al.

Summary: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to heart failure through remodelling of the myocardium and abnormal cardiac bioenergetics associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Factors such as mitochondrial shape, size, and organization within cardiomyocytes play a key role in influencing mitochondrial function. Inflammation may contribute to the development of heart failure and diabetes.

Platelets Facilitate the Wound-Healing Capability of Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Mitochondrial Transfer and Metabolic Reprogramming

Jennyfer Levoux et al.

Summary: Platelets enhance the therapeutic potential of MSCs by transferring mitochondria and promoting pro-angiogenic activity. Activation of the de novo fatty acid synthesis pathway is required for increased secretion of pro-angiogenic factors by platelet-preconditioned MSCs. Testing platelet mitochondria quality before clinical use is crucial for optimizing their effects.

Mitochondrial Transfer Improves Cardiomyocyte Bioenergetics and Viability in Male Rats Exposed to Pregestational Diabetes

Eli J. Louwagie et al.

Summary: Offspring born to diabetic or obese mothers have a higher lifetime risk of heart disease. Research has shown that exposure to late-gestational diabetes mellitus (LGDM) or maternal high-fat (HF) diet can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired cardiomyocyte bioenergetics, and cardiac dysfunction in rat offspring. Findings suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction may play a central role in neonatal cardiomyopathy, with sex-specific differences observed in mitochondria-mediated mechanisms of heart disease development. Therapeutic mitochondrial transfer may have potential limitations, such as inconsistent effects in male and female offspring.

The effect of extracellular vesicles on the regulation of mitochondria under hypoxia

Yaodan Zhang et al.

Summary: Under hypoxic conditions, mitochondria indirectly regulate cellular functions through the release of vesicles, while also triggering adaptive mechanisms to maintain function in response to hypoxia. This intercellular communication method can change mitochondrial function by altering the biological effects of receptor cells.

Selective packaging of mitochondrial proteins into extracellular vesicles prevents the release of mitochondrial DAMPs

Kiran Todkar et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial content in extracellular vesicles (EVs) can exacerbate inflammation, while its role in non-inflammatory conditions remains unclear. The research demonstrates that mitochondria-derived vesicles target material to EVs, while Parkinson's disease-related protein Parkin directs damaged mitochondrial content to lysosomes, shedding light on mitochondria-driven immune responses.

The Functions, Methods, and Mobility of Mitochondrial Transfer Between Cells

Yiming Qin et al.

Summary: Mitochondria are crucial organelles in cells, playing key roles in energy metabolism and apoptosis. Transcellular transfer of mitochondria, facilitated by structures like tunneling nanotubes, extracellular vesicles, and Cx43 gap junctions, is driven by a transport complex. Adapters like mitochondrial Rho small GTPase MIRO and motor proteins like myosin XIX aid in the transcellular transport of mitochondria. This review discusses the roles of these structures in mitochondrial transcellular transfer and their potential for clinical therapies.

EV Cargo Sorting in Therapeutic Development for Cardiovascular Disease

Cherrie D. Sherman et al.

Summary: EVs, actively secreted by cells, play a significant role in intercellular communication and have therapeutic potential. They can transfer bioactive molecules to maintain cellular homeostasis, diagnose diseases, and treat disease progression. Understanding EV cargo sorting mechanisms and designing therapeutic delivery systems are crucial for utilizing EVs in treating cardiovascular disease.
