Nitric oxide-releasing poly(ε-caprolactone)/S-nitrosylated keratin biocomposite scaffolds for potential small-diameter vascular grafts

Pengfei Li et al.

Summary: A novel NO-releasing small-diameter vascular graft was developed using a low toxic NO donor of S-nitrosated keratin (KSNO) coelectrospun with poly(epsilon-caprolactone). The graft showed selective enhancement of endothelial cell adhesion and growth while inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation, along with significant antibacterial properties and good blood compatibility. Animal experiments demonstrated the potential of this biocomposite graft in vascular tissue engineering.

Electrospun tubular vascular grafts to replace damaged peripheral arteries: A preliminary formulation study

Rossella Dorati et al.

Summary: Polymeric tubular vascular grafts manufactured using electrospinning technique have the potential to serve as an alternative to autologous vascular grafts for treating peripheral artery occlusive disease. By combining different biocompatible and biodegradable polymers in various design approaches, researchers were able to produce prototypes with optimal mechanical behavior and cell interaction for tissue regeneration purposes.

Biomimetic tubular scaffold with heparin conjugation for rapid degradation in in situ regeneration of a small diameter neoartery

Renato S. Navarro et al.

Summary: A biomimetic tubular scaffold was developed for rapid in situ blood vessel regeneration. By synthesizing a polymer and covalently attaching heparin, desirable functionalities were imparted to the scaffold. The scaffold was successfully tested in a rat model, showing superior vascular regeneration and no adverse reactions.

Cardiomyocytes Cellular Phenotypes After Myocardial Infarction

Alessandra Maria Lodrini et al.

Summary: Despite the advancement in interventional coronary reperfusion strategies, mortality from acute myocardial infarction remains high. MI leads to adverse remodelling in the affected myocardium, with cellular phenotypes like senescence, inflammation, and dedifferentiation playing key roles in the pathophysiology of the infarcted heart. Enhancing electric coupling between cardiomyocytes, eliminating senescent cells, and upregulating cellular processes like autophagy could potentially improve cardiac contractility post-MI.
