Phylogeny and classification of Odonata using targeted genomics

Seth M. Bybee et al.

Summary: Dragonflies and damselflies are a charismatic, medium-sized insect order with a unique potential for comparative research. A new study provided an ordinal hypothesis of classification based on high throughput data, revealing the monophyly of all three suborders but also highlighting unresolved portions of the topology and potential evolutionary scenarios like incomplete lineage sorting and introgression. The study proposed an updated odonate classification with the addition of new families and reinstatement of two others, while also identifying problematic taxonomic groupings for future examination to improve the current phylogenetic hypothesis.
