Unidirectional mating-type switching confers self-fertility to Thielaviopsis cerberus, the only homothallic species in the genus

Daniella Kramer et al.

Summary: The study investigates the genetic basis of homothallism in Thielaviopsis cerberus, the only known self-fertile species within this genus. By analyzing the structure and gene content of the mating-type locus, the study reveals the mechanisms underlying genetic conversion processes, and demonstrates the structural flexibility of mating-type loci among different species.

Diversity of marine fungi associated with wood baits in the estuary Ria de Aveiro, with descriptions of Paralulworthia halima, comb. nov., Remispora submersa, sp. nov., and Zalerion pseudomaritima, sp. nov.

Summary: Lignicolous marine fungi are a unique group of microorganisms mainly found in mangroves, salt marshes, and estuaries, often associated with driftwood or submerged wood. In a study conducted in the Ria de Aveiro estuary in Portugal, seventeen distinct marine fungal species were identified, with the most abundant belonging to the family Lulworthiaceae. Through a combination of genetic, morphological, and physiological data, two new species were described, and a confusing taxonomic placement was clarified for another species.
