Phylogenetic analysis and in-depth characterization of functionally and structurally diverse CE5 cutinases

Vera Novy et al.

Summary: Cutinases are esterases that can release fatty acids from the apoplastic layer in plants. A study identified 151 cutinase genes from carbohydrate esterase family 5 for further analysis, revealing close relationships between cutinases with available crystal structures. Nine diverse cutinases were selected for characterization and the five with the highest activity on bulky hydrophobic compounds were chosen for in-depth kinetic and structure-function analysis.

The Plant Cuticle: An Ancient Guardian Barrier Set Against Long-Standing Rivals

Gulab Chand Arya et al.

Summary: The cuticle on plant aerial surfaces, composed of cutin polyester and waxes, serves as a protective barrier that prevents water loss, regulates transpiration, and facilitates gas and solute transport. It also acts as the first line of defense against environmental cues and biotic stresses, including pathogens and pests. The complex molecular interactions between plants and pathogens primarily occur at the cuticle interface, where epicuticular waxes and cutin monomers play multidimensional roles.
