Pakistan's backyard poultry farming initiative: impact analysis from a public health perspective

Taliha Ahmed et al.

Summary: Commercial poultry rearing has a long history in Pakistan, dating back to the 1960s. In addition, backyard poultry setups have been a source of food and income for farmers in rural areas for many years. Different poultry rearing practices have varying approaches to feed supplementation, management, and biosafety measures, all of which can impact disease spread and vulnerability. The government's promotion of backyard poultry farming practices may potentially lead to the spread of zoonotic illnesses in the population.
