Endocannabinoid system in psychotic and mood disorders, a review of human studies

Ranjini Garani et al.

Summary: Despite evidence of endocannabinoid system involvement in psychiatric disorders, our understanding remains limited. Studies show alterations of brain CB1 receptors and peripheral blood endocannabinoids in psychotic and mood disorders, sensitive to treatment status, disease state, and symptom severity. More investigation beyond the CB1 receptor is needed to fully understand the role of the endocannabinoid system in these disorders.

Fabio Arturo Iannotti et al.

Summary: PPARs are a family of nuclear receptors that regulate the expression of target genes involved in metabolism, immune reaction, cell differentiation, and other cellular changes. They are activated by various lipid molecules, including cannabinoids, and interact with the endocannabinoid system to modulate physiological and pathophysiological functions.

Bryan Latrell Holloman et al.

Summary: Chronic inflammation is believed to be the underlying cause of various diseases, including cardiovascular and neurological diseases, while cannabinoids are thought to suppress inflammation through multiple pathways, including regulating gene epigenetic modulation, which helps inhibit inflammation and discover new therapeutic approaches.

Role of the Endocannabinoid System in the Adipose Tissue with Focus on Energy Metabolism

Volatiana Rakotoarivelo et al.

Summary: The endocannabinoid system plays an important role in controlling processes such as energy acquisition and expenditure, and interacts with hormones like leptin and ghrelin. In addition to being present in the central nervous system, the endocannabinoid system is also found in peripheral tissues, particularly adipose tissues. The inhibitory effect of the CB1 antagonist on fat mass indicates that the endocannabinoid system may have a peripheral action beyond its appetite reduction effect.
