Transcriptional profiling of microglia in the injured brain reveals distinct molecular features underlying neurodegeneration

Cong Liu et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a link between neurotrauma and neurodegenerative diseases, with microglia playing a potentially important role in sex differences, especially displaying distinct molecular signatures after cortical injury. The hypotheses and gene candidates presented in this study may be worth further exploration to understand the roles of microglia in neurotrauma and sex-biased neurodegenerative diseases.

Improved risk assessment of coronary artery disease by substituting paraoxonase 1 activity for HDL-C: Novel cardiometabolic biomarkers based on HDL functionality

Abdolkarim Mahrooz et al.

Summary: Developing laboratory assays to evaluate HDL functions and improving cardiovascular disease risk assessment by investigating new cardiometabolic risk factors based on substituting paraoxonase 1 (PON1) as a critical enzyme in the functionality of HDL for that of HDL-C may help predict the risk of coronary artery disease. The study found that the new cardiometabolic ratios remained significant as independent variables after multivariate adjustment, providing optimal discriminating cutoffs for CAD. Substituting PON1 activity for HDL-C in atherogenic lipid ratios can enhance CAD risk assessment by providing an index of HDL activity.

Microglial gene signature reveals loss of homeostatic microglia associated with neurodegeneration of Alzheimer's disease

Akira Sobue et al.

Summary: Analysis of microglia RNA sequencing in mouse models and human brains revealed a significant reduction in homeostatic microglial genes and upregulation of disease-associated microglia genes in neurodegenerative disease models. The reduction of homeostatic microglial genes was correlated with neuronal cell loss in mice, while early AD pathology in humans showed decreased expression of microglia and oligodendrocyte-specific markers.

Leptin in Leanness and Obesity JACC State-of-the-Art Review

Nikolaos Perakakis et al.

Summary: Leptin is a key hormone secreted by adipose tissue that conveys information about energy stores, playing a crucial role in neuroendocrine function and energy homeostasis. Studies have investigated leptin's mechanisms in both healthy states and various metabolic diseases, with similarities and differences between animal and human biology highlighted. Clinical applications, future research directions, and the development of next-generation leptin analogs are discussed in this review.

The Role of the Adipokine Leptin in Immune Cell Function in Health and Disease

Kaitlin Kiernan et al.

Summary: Leptin, produced by adipocytes in proportion to adipose tissue mass, plays a critical role in the immune response to changes in overall nutrition. Despite its main roles in regulating systemic metabolism and appetite, it also influences immune cell function, leading to a largely pro-inflammatory phenotype.
