Experimental investigation on damage mechanisms and buckling behaviors of thin composite laminates in compression after impact

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates damage mechanisms and buckling behaviors of thin composite laminates under low-velocity impact and compression-after-impact loading conditions. Experimental results show the effects of different stacking sequences on delamination morphology and compression damage propagation.

Machine learning assisted characterisation and simulation of compressive damage in composite laminates

Johannes Reiner et al.

Summary: The study proposed a data-rich framework to characterize the macroscopic strain-softening response of laminated composites under compressive loading using machine learning models. By simulating compression tests with an efficient FE model and training two ML methods, the study successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of using ML to reduce experimental efforts for damage characterization in composites subjected to compressive loads.

A practical approach for the non-local simulation of progressive damage in quasi-isotropic fibre-reinforced composite laminates

Johannes Reiner

Summary: This paper presents a generic strategy to generate macroscopic continuum damage models using non-local averaging, and calibrates the model with experimental data for specific carbon fiber-reinforced composites. The results show that non-local modeling enables more realistic simulation of damage, and suggest choosing a small enough averaging radius to avoid significant increase in computational cost.

Bridging the low-velocity impact energy versus impact damage and residual compression strength for composite laminates

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: A finite element model based on fiber kinking and a transversal fracture angle damage model with cohesive elements is proposed to simulate the low-velocity impact and compression after impact of composites. The model is validated using experimental work with a carbon fiber/epoxy material system, showing good agreement with experimental results. The analysis reveals that delamination is the dominant damage mode for LVI, while CAI exhibits a brittle behavior with little loss of stiffness before failure. The relationship between LVI energy and damage, as well as impact energy and CAI strength, is established.
