The natural history of insomnia: predisposing, precipitating, coping, and perpetuating factors over the early developmental course of insomnia

Jason G. Ellis et al.

Summary: This study is the first to examine factors influencing the early developmental course of insomnia, including predisposing, precipitating, coping, and perpetuating factors. Results showed that age, lower openness to experience, and conscientiousness, higher insomnia severity, anxiety levels, and affective sleep preoccupation predict acute insomnia status. Additionally, previous insomnia episodes, higher depression scores, and affective sleep preoccupation scores predict persistence of insomnia rather than natural remission.
