Electro-Fenton treatment of real pharmaceutical wastewater paired with a BDD anode: Reaction mechanisms and respective contribution of homogeneous and heterogeneous •OH

Hugo Olvera-Vargas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergy between %OH and BDD(center dot OH) in the EF-BDD process for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, achieving a high mineralization yield of 97.1%. While EF-DSA effectively increased the biodegradability of the effluent, EF-BDD showed superior performance in quasi-complete mineralization, despite higher operational costs.

Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment: Advances in formation and detection of reactive species and mechanisms

Soliu Oladejo Ganiyu et al.

Summary: The knowledge of electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) mechanisms has evolved over the past three decades, aided by advances in analytical and spectrometric techniques. The type, nature, and quantity of reactive species generated in EAOPs are controlled by various factors, and their accurate identification is crucial for understanding their reactivity. The potency and reactivity of oxidants generated in EAOPs are similar regardless of the technique used, except in the case of heterogeneous and homogeneous hydroxyl radicals.

Application of boron-doped diamond, Ti/IrO2, and Ti/Pt anodes for the electrochemical oxidation of landfill leachate biologically pretreated by moving bed biofilm reactor

Arseto Yekti Bagastyo et al.

Summary: The study found that a combination of biological and electrochemical processes can effectively treat landfill leachates containing high concentrations of organic and nitrogenous compounds, with the MBBR combined with electrochemical oxidation showing effective removal of COD. The three different types of anodes showed varying removal efficiencies and energy consumption under different applied currents, while the performance for total nitrogen reduction still needs improvement.
