Insight into Structural Evolution, Active Sites, and Stability of Heterogeneous Electrocatalysts

Shenlong Zhao et al.

Summary: Studying the structure-activity correlations of electrocatalysts is crucial for improving the conversion of electrical to chemical energy. Recent evidence obtained through operando characterization techniques shows that the structural evolution of catalysts, caused by their interaction with electric fields, electrolytes, and reactants/intermediates, leads to the formation of real active sites. It is therefore important to summarize the research advances in structural evolution and envision future developments. In this Minireview, the fundamental concepts associated with structural evolution, the triggers of this evolution, and advanced operando characterizations are discussed. The reversibility of structural evolution in heterogeneous electrocatalysis, with a focus on the oxygen evolution and CO2 reduction reactions, is also highlighted. Finally, the key challenges and opportunities in this exciting field are presented.

Tip-Enhanced Electric Field: A New Mechanism Promoting Mass Transfer in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, NiFe alloy nanocone arrays were used to enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) rate and outperform state-of-the-art OER electrocatalysts. The high-curvature tips on the nanocones induce a local electric field that significantly increases the concentration of hydroxide ions near the active sites, promoting OER activity. This local field enhanced OER kinetics is suggested to be a generic effect applicable to other OER catalysts.

Se-induced underpotential deposition of amorphous CoSe2 ultrathin nanosheet arrays as high-efficiency oxygen evolution electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries

Ruopeng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, amorphous CoSe2 ultrathin nanosheet arrays were electrodeposited and exhibited superior catalytic activity towards OER compared to their crystalline counterparts and commercial catalysts. When used as an air cathode in a zinc-air battery, the amorphous CoSe2 showed better performance and cyclic stability than crystalline CoSe2 and Pt/C-RuO2 electrodes. This work presents a new underpotential deposition strategy for fabricating high-activity amorphous catalysts with great potential for practical applications.
