Polarization-Modulated Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy: Toward Circular Dichroism without Circular Photons and Bloch Wave-function Reconstruction

Michael Schueler et al.

Summary: ARPES is a powerful technique for studying the electronic band structure of crystalline solids, but retrieving the complex-valued Bloch wave function from measured photoemission data has been challenging. In this study, a novel measurement method is introduced to retrieve the phase information of photoemission matrix elements by tracking the modulation of photoemission intensity upon polarization axis rotation.

A light-induced phononic symmetry switch and giant dissipationless topological photocurrent in ZrTe5

Liang Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, dissipationless currents were generated in a centrosymmetric Dirac material ZrTe5 using laser-induced coherent phonons with broken inversion symmetry. The phononic terahertz symmetry switching led to the formation of Weyl points, resulting in a topological photocurrent with distinctive features such as Berry curvature dominance and chirality protection, enabling exceptional ballistic transport properties. The results suggest that phononic terahertz control offers a novel approach for coherent manipulation of Weyl nodes and robust quantum transport without the need for static electric or magnetic fields.

Studying local Berry curvature in 2H-WSe2 by circular dichroism photoemission utilizing crystal mirror plane

Soohyun Cho et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the observation of Berry curvature in 2H-WSe2 using CD-ARPES. By comparing CD-ARPES data under different experimental geometries, the contribution of Berry curvature to CD intensities was successfully extracted, allowing for the mapping of Berry curvature in the momentum space of topological materials.

Experimental Evidence of Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Kekule-Ordered Graphene

Changhua Bao et al.

Summary: Researchers have reported direct experimental evidence of chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) in Li-intercalated graphene, showing gap opening at the Dirac point, Kekule-O type modulation, and chirality mixing near the gap edge. This work opens up opportunities for investigating CSB related physics in a Kekule-ordered graphene.

Ultrafast dynamical Lifshitz transition

Samuel Beaulieu et al.

Summary: Fermi surface plays a crucial role in understanding metals and correlated many-body systems. While Lifshitz transitions have been demonstrated in a broad range of materials by equilibrium tuning, an experimental demonstration of a nonequilibrium dynamical route for ultrafast modification of Fermi surface topology is lacking. This study introduces a scheme for driving an ultrafast Lifshitz transition in a correlated type-II Weyl semimetal, shedding light on a previously unexplored ultrafast scheme for controlling Fermi surface topology.

Non-local dxy nematicity and the missing electron pocket in FeSe

Luke C. Rhodes et al.

Summary: By analyzing the strong contribution of the d(xy) orbital to nematic ordering in FeSe, we propose a model that explains the unusual Fermi surface and accurately reproduces the anisotropic momentum dependence of the superconducting gap. This model also predicts a Lifshitz transition of an electron pocket mediated by temperature and sulfur doping, and provides constraints on possible nematic mechanisms.

Summary: The physics of quantum materials is influenced by many-body interactions and mathematical concepts, with ARPES playing a central role in research. Over the past two decades, ARPES has matured significantly in terms of resolution and expansion into different domains, while the ability to synthesize new materials and apply nonthermal tuning parameters has opened up new dimensions in research.

Momentum-space signatures of Berry flux monopoles in the Weyl semimetal TaAs

M. Unzelmann et al.

Summary: The study reports momentum-resolved spectroscopic signatures of Berry flux monopoles in TaAs, providing a basis for the study of quantum-geometric effects in solids. The experimental results show topologically non-trivial winding of orbital-angular-momentum and chirality-dependent spin-angular-momentum in Weyl semimetals, indicating the presence of Berry flux monopoles.

Fluctuation control of nonthermal orbital order

Francesco Grandi et al.

Summary: Orbitally ordered states have multiple discrete minima in their free energy, with external forces such as electric laser fields or selectively excited phonons guiding the order parameter through these landscapes. The free energy strongly depends on fluctuations, and restoring forces close to a minimum are sometimes solely of entropic origin. Nonthermal fluctuations can control the dynamics of the order parameter. Remanent nonthermal fluctuations can stabilize high-symmetry phases even after the potential has returned to its low-temperature form, facilitating laser-induced switching.

Excitonic insulator emerging from semiconducting normal state in 1T-TiSe2

Jin Mo Bok et al.

Summary: The study provides calculations based on solving the exciton gap equation with material-specific electronic structures to confirm the excitonic insulator (EI) state of 1T-TiSe2 at lower critical temperatures below 200 K. The majority of the measured Tc is shown to originate from Coulomb interaction rather than electron-lattice coupling, with a coherence between the semiconductor state above and the EI state below Tc in 1T-TiSe2.

Summary: By investigating the topological surface state in Bi-2(Te,Se)(3)(0001) using spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and relativistic one-step photoemission theory, we found that Bi2Te2Se has an approximately isotropic Fermi surface while Bi2Te3 exhibits a hexagonal anisotropy, resulting in out-of-plane photoelectron spin polarization with strong dependence on light polarization, excitation energy, and crystallographic direction.
