The VLPFC versus the DLPFC in Downregulating Social Pain Using Reappraisal and Distraction Strategies

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that both the DLPFC and VLPFC play a role in facilitating the downregulation of affective responses caused by social exclusion, demonstrating their causal role in voluntary emotional regulation. Additionally, these two cortical regions show relative functional specificity for distraction (DLPFC) and reappraisal (VLPFC) strategies.

Stability of hippocampal subfield volumes after trauma and relationship to development of PTSD symptoms

C. N. Weis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between hippocampal subfield volumes and PTSD symptoms in a large trauma-exposed urban sample. No significant relationship was found between subfield volumes and PTSD symptoms, but it was confirmed that FreeSurfer v6.0 hippocampal subfield segmentation is reliable when applied to a traumatically-injured sample using both cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis pipelines.

Racial Discrimination is Associated with Acute Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Predicts Future Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity in Trauma-Exposed Black Adults in the United States

Claire M. Bird et al.

Summary: In the United States, Black residents exposed to traumatic events have a higher risk of developing PTSD with more severe symptoms compared to White counterparts. Past racial discrimination is significantly associated with acute posttraumatic stress symptoms and predicts future PTSD symptoms. This highlights the impact of racial discrimination on mental health and the call for racism to be classified as a public health crisis.
