3D printed composite materials for craniofacial implants: current concepts, challenges and future directions

Swati Jindal et al.

Summary: Millions of craniofacial surgeries are performed annually worldwide for bone replacement and augmentation, which impose significant economic burden and aesthetic expectations. Autografts and allografts are the first choice for treatment but their limited availability and shaping difficulty have led to alternative strategies. Biomaterial-based approaches have been explored due to ample supply but conventional processing technologies have drawbacks, especially in producing patient-specific implants. Additive manufacturing has gained attention as it allows customization according to patient needs, however, biomaterial implants have limitations such as stress shielding and limited bone integration. Composites have been investigated in recent decades to overcome these limitations and improve bone integration. The use of polymeric composite-based biomaterials in combination with 3D printing technology for patient-specific craniofacial implants is reviewed in this article, along with challenges and future perspectives associated with 3D printing of polymer-based composites.
