A Plio-Pleistocene (c. 0-4 Ma) cyclostratigraphy for IODP Site U1478 (Mozambique Channel, SW Indian Ocean): Exploring an offshore record of paleoclimate and ecosystem variability in SE Africa

Andreas Koutsodendris et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the paleoclimate and ecosystem variability in Africa during the Plio/Pleistocene period, using XRF core-scanning records from IODP Site U1478 near the Limpopo River mouth in the SW Indian Ocean. The results indicate that elemental distribution in the cores is mainly controlled by terrigenous input rates, with some influence from bottom-current transport and post-depositional processes. The study also reveals quasi-cyclical variability in the log(Ti/Ca) ratio across the entire record, closely matching orbital parameters, but with varying cyclical behavior through different time intervals.

Eastern African environmental variation and its role in the evolution and cultural change of Homo over the last 1 million years

Rachel L. Lupien et al.

Summary: Assessing the importance of eastern African environmental variability on human evolution is crucial, however, records in this region are lacking. Over the past 1 million years, significant anatomical and cultural developments in Homo occurred alongside major global climatic changes. Results support the 'variability selection hypothesis' that increased environmental variability selected for adaptable traits, behaviors, and technology in our hominin ancestors.

Remote and local drivers of Pleistocene South Asian summer monsoon precipitation: A test for future predictions

Steven C. Clemens et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed South Asian summer monsoon precipitation and runoff to assess their operation in the Pleistocene. It found a strong coherence between South Asian precipitation and runoff with Earth's orbital parameters, atmospheric carbon dioxide changes, and cross-equatorial wind strength at the precession band. The projected monsoon response to ongoing high-latitude ice melt and rising carbon dioxide levels is consistent with past dynamics over the past 0.9 million years.
