Source Apportionment and Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Mn) in Surface Sediments from the Dragon Lake, Bengbu, China

Li Ma et al.

Summary: The study found high concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments of Dragon Lake, with Cd posing the highest biological risk. The north part of the lake showed higher pollution levels and should be given more attention. Heavy metals were mainly attributed to anthropogenic sources.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals in sediments and marine organisms in Daya Bay, using the Monte Carlo method to analyze the uncertainty of results. It found that Hg was the primary pollutant with contributions from Cd and As to ecological risks. The study suggests the need to strengthen management of Hg, Cd, and As emissions to effectively control heavy metal contamination in Daya Bay.

Contamination of Trace Elements in River Ecosystem and Source Apportionment Based on Their Relationship with Landscape Patterns

Zhenglei Xie et al.

Summary: The study found that landscape types and percentages significantly affect the concentration of trace elements in rivers, with agricultural land and built-up area percentages positively correlated with trace element concentrations, while forest land percentages negatively correlated. As slope steepness increases, there is a more significant positive correlation between built-up percentages and trace element concentrations. Mining activities are identified as a major potential source of contamination.

Ecological Risk Assessment and Contamination History of Heavy Metals in the Sediments of Chagan Lake, Northeast China

Panfeng Liu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the spatio-temporal distribution of heavy metals in Chagan Lake sediments in Northeast China. Through the Pb-210 dating method, the pollution history of heavy metals was examined, and the contamination degree was evaluated using the potential ecological risk index and geo-accumulation index. Principal component analysis identified sources of heavy metals, showing enrichment of heavy metals in the surface sediment. The sources were inferred as natural sources, agricultural activities, energy development, and anthropogenic activities such as traffic and coal burning.

Analysis of Spatial Variability of River Bottom Sediment Pollution with Heavy Metals and Assessment of Potential Ecological Hazard for the Warta River, Poland

Joanna Jaskula et al.

Summary: The pollution of river bottom sediments by heavy metals is a significant environmental issue resulting from human activities. A study on the Warta River in Poland showed that heavy metal pollution was heavier in 2016 compared to 2017, with lower ecological hazard in the latter year. Cluster analysis revealed distinct groups of sample collection stations with similar chemical properties, suggesting that the concentrations of heavy metals may be influenced by urbanized areas and river processes.

Ascertaining the pollution, ecological risk and source of metal(loid)s in the upstream sediment of Danjiang River, China

Sukai Zhuang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the metal(loid) contamination in the sediment of the upstream Danjiang River is relatively high, mainly originating from agricultural and natural sources, as well as traffic and industrial sources. The combination of As, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, and Zn in most samples might have a 21% probability of being toxic.

Integration of Water Quality Indices and Multivariate Modeling for Assessing Surface Water Quality in Qaroun Lake, Egypt

Mohamed Gad et al.

Summary: Water quality in Qaroun Lake has deteriorated due to rising population and unplanned development, impacting ecosystem health. Various pollution indices and analytical methods were used to assess the contamination levels and factors affecting the lake's environmental system. The study recommends treating sewage and drainage wastewater before discharge, and using SVMR models for accurate prediction of water quality indices.

Summary: The study found that water quality in Qaroun Lake is polluted to varying degrees. New two-band SRIs show moderate to strong relationships with water quality indicators, while new three-band SRIs show strong relationships. Combining new three-band SRIs with PLSR models can accurately, timely, and non-destructively monitor water quality indicators.

Summary: The study aimed to assess pollution loading and ecological risk of toxicity levels in the surface sediment of the Persian Gulf. Geochemical analysis revealed anthropogenic enrichment of Fe and Al elements, while cobalt and cadmium were found to be at high contamination and high-risk levels. Environmental modeling revealed hotspots of composite contamination in certain regions affected by oil and gas refining manufacturing, industrial zones, and petrochemical units.
