Modelling the water dynamics of a tidal lagoon: The impact of human intervention in the Nador Lagoon (Morocco)

Francesco Maicu et al.

Summary: The Lagoon of Nador in Morocco has experienced significant man-made changes in recent years, resulting in the closure of the old inlet and the opening of a wider and deeper new inlet. A 3D hydrodynamic model was used to study the consequences of this modification, showing an increase in tidal amplitude, water circulation, and a shift towards ebb dominance with the new inlet. The water renewal time decreased, seasonal water temperature variations were observed, and the salinity reduced as a result of the changes.

Modeling Dynamic Processes of Mondego Estuary and Ó bidos Lagoon Using Delft3D

Joana Mendes et al.

Summary: This study utilizes the Delft3D model to investigate the physics and water quality dynamics of two estuarine systems on the Portuguese west coast, showcasing high accuracy in predicting local hydrodynamics and water quality. The model results highlight the importance of geomorphology and dimensions in tidal propagation, as well as differences in water volume exchange and dissolved oxygen variations between the two systems. Overall, the high transferability and stability of Delft3D make it a valuable tool for realistic simulation and research of estuarine systems, supporting their maintenance and restoration.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in the sediments of a Mediterranean lagoon complex

Maria Zoidou et al.

Summary: This study examines heavy metal contamination in the surface sediments of six coastal lagoons in Northern Greece. It found that Lafri Lagoon has the highest metal levels, while Agiasma and Porto Lagos have the lowest. The levels of As and Cr were found to exceed toxic effect threshold values, classifying the lagoons as very highly contaminated and polluted.

Residence Time Analysis in the Albufera of Valencia, a Mediterranean Coastal Lagoon, Spain

Juan Soria et al.

Summary: The Albufera of Valencia is a coastal lagoon located in the western area of the Mediterranean Sea, in the Iberian Peninsula. It has a small area but shallow depth, mainly used for rice cultivation. Due to a lack of continuous measurement data, evaluating the residence time of the lagoon is challenging. Research results show that the residence time of the lagoon varies by season and region.
