U-Pb detrital zircon ages from Gorgoglione Flysch sandstones in Southern Apennines (Italy) as provenance indicators

Annamaria Fornelli et al.

Summary: The study of sandstone samples from the Southern Apennines in Italy revealed that the detritus provenance of the Gorgoglione Flysch consisted of metamorphic rocks with abundant granitoids covered by sedimentary rocks, with a volcanic component present. Utilizing U-Pb detrital zircon ages, the provenance area was identified in the northwestern sectors of the Mediterranean area, where the Sardinia-Corsica block plays a fundamental role.

Disentangle the sediment mixing from geochemical proxies and detrital zircon geochronology

Yalong Li et al.

Summary: Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology and geochemical proxies have been applied to trace sediment sources in the Mulanxi river in southeast China. Results show different provenance signals preserved by detrital zircons and geochemical proxies, suggesting inconsistencies in source discrimination between tidal and non-tidal reaches. Source-to-sink connections were not observed between zircons from the Changjiang and Mulanxi, indicating limitations in sediment provenance tracing using different tracers such as detrital zircon ages and geochemical proxies.

Heavy Mineral Compositions of Sediments in the Southern Okinawa Trough and Their Provenance-Tracing Implication

Bowen Zhu et al.

Summary: The heavy mineral assemblages in the sediments of the southern Okinawa Trough were found to be very similar to those from the East China Sea shelf/Yangtze River, mainly composed of mica, chlorite, dolomite, actinolite, and hematite/magnetite. Actinolite and hornblende can indicate the supply of sediments from the East China Sea shelf/Yangtze River to the southern Okinawa Trough. Due to the complex sources, pyrite, epidote, and hematite/magnetite are not adequate indicators for distinguishing between different provenance areas.
