Engineering and characterization of gymnosperm sapwood toward enabling the design of water filtration devices

Krithika Ramchander et al.

Summary: Gymnosperm sapwood is a widely available material for constructing water filters, but its behavior as a filter is poorly understood and challenges such as short shelf life remain unaddressed. The authors have developed guidelines for the design and fabrication of xylem filters, and demonstrated gravity-operated filters with a shelf life of more than two years for removing contaminants from spring, tap, and ground water.
