A century of US beach nourishment

Nicole Elko et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the decadal and regional trends of beach nourishment in the U.S. over the past century, showing that sand volume placed on U.S. beaches has been increasing exponentially, with beach nourishment being a dominant shore protection method. Long-term beach management programs in California, Florida, and Louisiana demonstrate similarities in dedicated funding sources despite differences in motivation, timelines, and funding mechanisms.

Evaluating Transport Formulations for Application to Nearshore Berms

Rachel Bain et al.

Summary: This paper presents a technique for estimating the sediment transport rate of nearshore berms, which involves calculating longshore and cross-shore transport rates to generate total transport rate. The recommended technique showed good performance in accuracy and sensitivity based on evaluation of 11 historical nearshore berms.

Deep-water spectral wave steepness offshore mainland Portugal

Diogo Mendes et al.

Summary: This study examines the variability of deep-water spectral wave steepness (s(m)) offshore mainland Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean based on field measurements recorded between 2009 and 2020 at three different locations. The results show similar s(m) variability at different water depths with values between 0.004 and 0.072, and a decrease in s(m) values during September and October.

Beach nourishment has complex implications for the future of sandy shores

Matthieu A. de Schipper et al.

Summary: Beach nourishment, the addition of sand to increase beach width or volume, is a commonly used coastal management technique to combat erosion globally. In response to rising sea levels, storms, and decreasing sand supplies, beach nourishment has evolved to consider human safety, water recreation, groundwater dynamics, and ecosystem impacts. As the future of beach nourishment practices depends on factors like local vulnerability, sand availability, government regulations, and societal perceptions, multidisciplinary research is recommended to better understand the impacts of nourishments and guide diverse practices.
