Foodborne transmission of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the last decade. An overview

S. Almeria et al.

Summary: Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, with the main routes of transmission being through ingestion of tissue cysts, contaminated food or water, and transplacental transmission. It can be asymptomatic in most immunocompetent individuals but can be fatal in fetuses and immunocompromised adults. Outbreaks have been reported worldwide, with T. gondii also causing reproductive failure and clinical toxoplasmosis in animals. Foodborne transmission is a major focus of research in the last decade.

Advances in Toxoplasma gondii Vaccines: Current Strategies and Challenges for Vaccine Development

Ki-Back Chu et al.

Summary: Toxoplasmosis, caused by the apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is a globally important parasite-borne zoonotic disease, with approximately one-third of the world's population estimated to be infected with T. gondii. Efforts to develop a vaccine for T. gondii have been ongoing for decades, with various strategies tested in rodents showing promising results. However, the translation of these results into clinical studies remains a major obstacle to overcome for the development of a human vaccine.
