Global Policy Barriers and Enablers to Exercise and Physical Activity in Kidney Care

Paul N. Bennett et al.

Summary: Impairment in physical function and physical performance leads to decreased independence and health-related quality of life in people living with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease. However, physical activity and exercise are not prioritized in kidney care policies. This study aimed to identify global policy-related factors, barriers, and strategies to increase exercise participation and physical activity behavior for people living with kidney disease. The results emphasize the need for policies addressing funding, legislation, guidelines, and communication to support physical activity and improve health-related quality of life for people with kidney disease.

Global Policy Barriers and Enablers to Exercise and Physical Activity in Kidney Care

Paul N. Bennett et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify global policy-related enablers, barriers, and strategies to increase exercise participation and physical activity behavior for people living with kidney disease. Results showed that policies addressing funding, service provision, legislation, regulations, guidelines, the environment, communication, and marketing are required to support people with kidney disease to be physically active, participate in exercise, and improve health-related quality of life.

Assessing physical activity and function in patients with chronic kidney disease: a narrative review

Esmee A. Bakker et al.

Summary: Physical activity can benefit patients with chronic kidney disease and kidney transplant recipients, but limited evidence exists for this population. Valid assessment of physical activity and function is essential to monitor disease progression and frailty in these patients, with a variety of measurement methods available. To choose the most appropriate method, factors such as accuracy, content, outcome measures, expertise, resources, and time should be considered.

Accelerometer-measured physical activity and functional behaviours among people on dialysis

Khizr A. Nawab et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that wrist-worn accelerometers are a reliable method to measure physical activity in dialysis patients. Age and leg weakness appear to be more important determinants of low activity levels than cardiovascular disease in this population.

Estimation of Prevalence of Kidney Disease Treated With Dialysis in China: A Study of Insurance Claims Data

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: The prevalence of kidney disease treated with dialysis in China has been increasing from 2013 to 2017 and is predicted to continue rising through 2025. This highlights the importance of prevention and control strategies to address the growing burden of kidney failure.

Physical activity in hemodialysis patients on nondialysis and dialysis days: Prospective observational study

Rakesh Malhotra et al.

Summary: The study found that hemodialysis patients are frequently sedentary, with older patients being more inactive. These findings may help in developing interventions to increase physical activity among hemodialysis patients.

Effect of hemodiafiltration on measured physical activity: primary results of the HDFIT randomized controlled trial

Roberto Pecoits-Filho et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of high-volume online hemodiafiltration (HDF) on physical activity (PA) in dialysis patients were investigated. Despite achieving a high convective volume and positive impact on solute removal, HDF did not have a statistically significant treatment effect on PA compared to high-flux hemodialysis (HD). However, there were modest treatment effects observed, particularly in the hours following dialysis, which may warrant further investigation into the clinical significance.

Summary: The study showed that intradialytic exercise (IDX) program significantly improved physical activity and other clinical parameters in OL-HDF patients. This suggests that IDX may contribute to enhancing physical health and survival outcomes for OL-HDF patients.
