Inference of Nipah virus evolution, 1999-2015

Shannon L. M. Whitmer et al.

Summary: Using NiV-specific probes, 35 additional unique full-length genomic sequences were successfully generated from human specimens and viral isolates. The study inferred the evolutionary history of NiV in Bangladesh and demonstrated NiV's spatio-temporal spread in the country. Two distinct clades of NiV strains in Bangladesh were observed without significant genetic variation. Recommendations for future public health measures were also provided, including further research on genetic variation in the bat population and surveillance techniques for detecting NiV.
