Construction of Higher-Order Metric Fluctuation Terms in Spacetime Symmetry-Breaking Effective Field Theory

Quentin G. Bailey

Summary: In the context of spontaneous symmetry breaking, we examined the basic conservation laws for diffeomorphism symmetry, identifying all terms related to a two-tensor coupling to cubic order in metric and tensor field fluctuations. These results can be used for phenomenological calculations. One key finding was that maintaining underlying diffeomorphism symmetry in spontaneous symmetry breaking prevents decoupling of two-tensor fluctuations from metric fluctuations at the action level, except in special cases of quadratic actions.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

On Plane Wave Solutions in Lorentz-Violating Extensions of Gravity

J. R. Nascimento et al.

Summary: This paper explores dispersion relations for plane wave solutions in Lorentz-breaking gravity extensions with operators of dimension 3, 4, 5, and 6. It is demonstrated that these dispersion relations exhibit a usual Lorentz-invariant mode when higher derivatives are involved in the corresponding additive term.

Signatures of Lorentz Violation in Continuous Gravitational-Wave Spectra of Ellipsoidal Neutron Stars

Rui Xu et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of Lorentz invariance violation on the rotation of neutron stars and the calculation of quadrupole radiation caused by it. By comparing the GW spectra of rotating ellipsoidal neutron stars under Lorentz-violating gravity with those under Lorentz-invariant gravity, it was found that the former had higher frequency components beyond the second harmonic, potentially serving as signatures of Lorentz violation in continuous GW spectra of rotating neutron stars.

Backgrounds in gravitational effective field theory

V. Alan Kostelecky et al.

Summary: This study investigates effective field theories describing gravity coupled to matter with operators of arbitrary mass dimensions, including violations of local Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance while preserving internal gauge symmetries. Theoretical frameworks for these violations, including transformations in various spacetimes and symmetry breaking implications, are discussed. Techniques for constructing effective operators and explicit expressions for terms containing operators of mass dimension six or less in the effective action for general relativity coupled to the Standard Model are presented. Special cases, such as Einstein-Maxwell effective field theories and scalar coupling constants, are also considered.

Gravitational Wave Implications for the Parity Symmetry of Gravity in the High Energy Region

Yi-Fan Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers used gravitational waves to experimentally test the parity conservation of gravity and found no violations of general relativity, constraining the lower bound of the parity-violating energy scale to be 0.09 GeV. They also discovered that third generation gravitational-wave detectors could potentially enhance this bound to O(10(2)) GeV, indicating that gravitational-wave astronomy may usher in a new era of testing the ultraviolet behavior of gravity in the high energy region.
