Extravascular Dermal Trypanosomes in Suspected and Confirmed Cases of gambiense Human African Trypanosomiasis

Mariame Camara et al.

Summary: In the study of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis, it was found that live parasites may remain undetected in the blood of some seropositive individuals but are present in their skin. The skin may serve as a potential reservoir for African trypanosomes.

Manon Geerts et al.

Summary: The newly developed T. b. gambiense inhibition ELISA (g-iELISA) based on the principle of antibody binding showed high specificity and sensitivity, making it suitable for regional laboratories in gHAT endemic countries for monitoring and surveillance.

Feasibility of a dried blood spot strategy for serological screening and surveillance to monitor elimination of Human African Trypanosomiasis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Raquel Inocencio da Luz et al.

Summary: This study assessed the sequential use of ELISA and ITL on dried blood spot samples as an alternative strategy for interrupting HAT transmission. Sampling in different areas and centralized testing showed similar ELISA positivity rates to current screening techniques, with highly specific results from the ITL. Collecting dried blood spot samples followed by centralized testing could become an alternative surveillance strategy in HAT endemic areas.

Passive surveillance of human African trypanosomiasis in Cote d'Ivoire: Understanding prevalence, clinical symptoms and signs, and diagnostic test characteristics

Minayegninrin Kone et al.

Summary: As human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) approaches elimination, case management is being transferred to front line health care centers. This study in Côte d'Ivoire identified key clinical symptoms and signs that should trigger HAT testing, confirming the appropriateness of the existing HAT screening strategy with specific RDTs.
