The oxidation behavior of iron-chromium alloys: The defining role of substrate chemistry on kinetics, microstructure and mechanical properties of the oxide scale

H. K. Mehtani et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the oxidation kinetics of iron-chromium alloys significantly decreased when the Cr content was 12 wt%, accompanied by a reduction in the number of distinguishable oxide layers. The inner oxide layer underwent phase transformation, resulting in higher hardness, increased compressive residual stresses, and significantly enhanced fracture toughness.
