Climate change impacts on soil salinity in agricultural areas

Dennis L. Corwin

Summary: Changes in climate patterns are negatively impacting agriculture, especially in arid regions. Proximal/remote sensors are useful in assessing the impact of climate change on soil salinity across scales. Factors such as salt-water intrusion, shallow water tables, and degraded water reuse will lead to increased soil salinity. There is a need for infrastructure and protocols to monitor soil salinity across multiple scales.

Targeting salt stress coping mechanisms for stress tolerance in Brassica: A research perspective

Adnan Noor Shah et al.

Summary: The Brassica genus consists of various cultivated species with economic importance, facing salt stress as a significant problem causing losses in growth and yield. Different species exhibit varying levels of salt tolerance mechanisms, such as the role of neurotransmitters and ion channel regulation. Agronomic strategies have also been discussed to alleviate salt stress severity in Brassica species.

Enhanced Production of Aromatic Amino Acids in Tobacco Plants Leads to Increased Phenylpropanoid Metabolites and Tolerance to Stresses

Moran Oliva et al.

Summary: Increasing levels of aromatic amino acids in plants through genetic modification can lead to improved tolerance to salt stress and better resistance against Egyptian broomrape, although no significant increase in tolerance to oxidative and drought stresses was observed.

The Role of Polyphenols in Abiotic Stress Response: The Influence of Molecular Structure

Dunja Samec et al.

Summary: Abiotic stressors such as extreme temperatures, drought, flood, light, salt, and heavy metals can affect biological diversity and crop production. Plants have mechanisms to cope with these stressors, and polyphenols, a group of plant-specialized metabolites, play a role in stress protection. Different polyphenol structures have varying biological activities and roles in abiotic stress responses.

Salinity Stress as an Elicitor for Phytochemicals and Minerals Accumulation in Selected Leafy Vegetables of Brassicaceae

Dunja Samec et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential role of NaCl as an eustressor for phytochemical accumulation and macro- and micro-element homeostasis in Brassica leafy vegetables. The findings suggest that low to moderate salinity treatments can increase phenolic compounds and induce glucosinolates in these vegetables. This information may be valuable for selecting crops grown on saline soils without disturbing element homeostasis.
