A novel mechanism study of microplastic and As co-contamination on indica rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects and mechanisms of PSMP and PTFE microplastics on As bioavailability in paddy soil. PSMP and PTFE inhibited root activity and reduced the abundance of certain bacteria, leading to decreased iron plaques on root surfaces and inhibited As uptake by rice. Additionally, PSMP and PTFE decreased hemoglobin content and inhibited the activities of starch synthase and pyrophosphorylase in rice grains, resulting in reduced starch accumulation and biomass. Ultimately, the physiological toxicity and adverse effects of PSMP, PTFE, and As led to decreased rice yield in co-contaminated soil.

Uptake and translocation of nano/microplastics by rice seedlings: Evidence from a hydroponic experiment

Yingying Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that both 80 nm and 1 μm PS microspheres were detected in the roots, stems, and leaves of rice seedlings, mainly aggregating on cell walls and in the intercellular regions. This suggests that rice seedlings can accumulate nano/microplastics in their roots and translocate them to aboveground tissues, potentially transferring them to higher trophic levels through the food chain.

Effect of Polystyrene Microplastics on Rice Seed Germination and Antioxidant Enzyme Activity

Qiuge Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that polystyrene microplastics can promote rice root length at certain concentrations, while also leading to a reduction in antioxidant enzyme activity. Roots of rice treated with PS-MPs accumulate high levels of reactive oxygen species, and transcriptome analysis shows that PS-MPs induce the expression of genes related to antioxidant enzyme activity in plant roots.

Polystyrene microplastics disturb the redox homeostasis, carbohydrate metabolism and phytohormone regulatory network in barley

Shuxin Li et al.

Summary: This study found that microplastics negatively affect the growth of barley plants by limiting root development and altering enzyme activities in roots. There were differences in carbohydrate and ROS metabolism enzyme activities between leaves and roots under microplastics treatment, as well as distinct changes in phytohormone concentrations. The findings suggest that the phytohormone regulatory network plays a key role in regulating enzyme activities in response to microplastics in barley plants.

A review of biodegradable plastics to biodegradable microplastics: Another ecological threat to soil environments?

Meng Qin et al.

Summary: Biodegradable plastics are considered as a promising substitute for non-degradable plastics that lead to serious pollution, but not all biodegradable plastics are fully degradable naturally.
