Basic Statistical Estimation Outperforms Machine Learning in Monthly Prediction of Seasonal Climatic Parameters

Eslam A. Hussein et al.

Summary: This paper examines the effectiveness of five widely used machine learning algorithms in monthly prediction of seasonal climatic parameters using monthly image data. The study finds that machine learning does not significantly outperform basic statistical estimators and performs poorly on most feature sets. The research provides error bars for the relative performance of different predictors and warns about potential data leakage issues with certain data processing methods.
