Biocrusts mediate a new mechanism for land degradation under a changing climate

M. L. Phillips et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of climate and land-use change on biocrusts and soil stability in drylands. The results show that biocrusts can recover rapidly under ambient temperatures, but warming combined with precipitation disturbance hampers their recovery. Additionally, warming alone leads to the loss of biocrusts, mosses, lichens, and soil stability. This research reveals a new mechanism contributing to land degradation in drylands caused by warming-induced state shift in biocrust communities.

Effectiveness of vegetation cover pattern on regulating soil erosion and runoff generation in red soil environment, southern China

Chongjun Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the regulation effect of vegetation cover pattern on runoff and soil erosion in a humid environment, finding that vegetation cover plays a crucial role in response to rainfall, particularly in mitigating soil loss. The relationship between vegetation coverage and runoff volume weakens as rainfall depth increases.

Effect of water availability on induced cyanobacterial biocrust development

J. R. Roman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water availability on induced biocrust growth in different degraded soils, showing that cyanobacteria inoculation can improve cover, SOC, and EPS gains. The irrigation regime significantly affected cyanobacteria cover, Chla spectral absorption, and EPS, with N. commune performing particularly well under dry conditions.

Overcoming field barriers to restore dryland soils by cyanobacteria inoculation

J. R. Roman et al.

Summary: The inoculation of cyanobacteria promotes soil improvement, with better results seen when the soil is covered with a vegetal mesh, enhancing cyanobacterial colonization and soil aggregation. Developing diversified efficient habitat amelioration strategies may be key in the successful application of this restoration technique in the field.

Toward a sustainable grazing management based on biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in drylands

Ruiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Overgrazing in drylands largely causes loss of biodiversity and land degradation. The response of multiple biodiversity (MBD) to grazing intensity, livestock type, and aridity varies in different regions, and MBD mediates the response of ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) to grazing. Sustainable grassland management should consider grazing practices and local climate in order to maintain high levels of EMF and MBD conservation in drylands.

Biocrust restoration: a key tool to recover degraded arid ecosystem functioning

Yolanda Canton et al.

Summary: Biocrusts, autotroph and heterotroph communities covering 12% of Earth's land surface, are highly vulnerable to climate change and human disturbance. The impacts of disturbance types on biocrusts include negative effects on biogeochemical cycles, water and energy balances, erosion processes, dust emissions, and biodiversity, reducing ecosystem services. Strategies for restoration include translocation of biocrust fragments and large-scale cultivation of biocrust-forming organisms, with future challenges identified for maximizing restoration success and conservation.

Reclamation of arid and semi-arid soils: The role of plant growth-promoting archaea and bacteria

Ayansina Segun Ayangbenro et al.

Summary: Arid and semi-arid soils are characterized by nutrient deficiency and water scarcity, leading to declining soil quality. The rhizospheric microbial community plays a crucial role in enhancing plant productivity by improving nutrient availability. Therefore, maximizing the function of rhizospheric microbes is essential for land restoration in arid and semi-arid environments to achieve optimal productivity.
