Vegetation-type conversion of evergreen chaparral shrublands to savannahs dominated by exotic annual herbs: causes and consequences for ecosystem function

R. Brandon Pratt

Summary: Vegetation-type conversion has occurred in chaparral shrublands in southern California, leading to significant changes in ecosystem functions. The main drivers of VTC include altered fire regimes, aridity, and human disturbance. VTC not only affects ecosystem function, but also has implications for global ecosystem services, climate change, and other aspects.

Tolerance and avoidance of urban cover in a southern California suburban raptor community over five decades

Daniel S. Cooper et al.

Summary: In a diurnal raptor community in southern California, nest site re-use varied among species, with some species showing moderate re-use rates while others showed almost none. Over time, nests began shifting from native vegetation to ornamental trees, and an increase in urban cover may be influencing some raptor species to select urban nest sites.
