Impact of cocoa agricultural intensification on bird diversity and community composition

Ruth E. Bennett et al.

Summary: Bird diversity declines sharply in low shade cocoa farms. Cocoa with over 30% canopy cover from diverse trees maintains bird diversity similar to nearby primary or mature secondary forest but with a different community of birds. Diversity of endemic species, frugivores, and insectivores (agriculture avoiders) declines, while diversity of habitat generalists, migrants, nectarivores, and granivores (agriculture associates) increases.

Soil Productivity Degradation in a Long-Term Eroded Olive Orchard under Semiarid Mediterranean Conditions

Manuel Gonzalez-Rosado et al.

Summary: The study found that conventional tillage and no tillage with herbicide application practices showed unsustainable erosion values, while no tillage with cover crop management decreased erosion rates. No tillage with cover crop not only reduced erosion rates but also changed the trend of soil productivity loss observed under conventional tillage and no tillage with herbicide application. Therefore, no tillage with cover crop had a positive influence on soil quality.

Seed rain in cocoa agroforests is induced by effects of forest loss on frugivorous birds and management intensity

Ilana Araujo-Santos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of landscape forest cover, animal seed dispersers, and local vegetation variables on seed rain structure in cocoa agroforests of the Brazilian Atlantic forest using structural equation models. The results showed that landscape forest cover and local management intensification play key roles in determining the seed diversity reaching cocoa agroforestry farms.

Summary: Based on the best scientific evidence, Spain should identify regional biodiversity targets, ensure criteria across environmental instruments like enhanced conditionality, and invest in biodiversity monitoring to evaluate the achievement of goals. Direct assessments of environmental objectives are feasible and beneficial for improving the environmental effectiveness of CAP measures.

Agricultural intensification erodes taxonomic and functional diversity in Mediterranean olive groves by filtering out rare species

Ruben Tarifa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increasing landscape complexity can mitigate the impact of agriculture on herbaceous plant composition, while agricultural intensification favors more functionally homogeneous assemblages and disadvantages insect-pollinated herbs. Functional richness increases exponentially with species richness, but in simple landscapes, species richness alone cannot lead to a significant enhancement in functional richness.

Preserving wintering frugivorous birds in agro-ecosystems under land use change: Lessons from intensive and super-intensive olive orchards

Rui Morgado et al.

Summary: Fleshy fruit production is intensifying globally, affecting frugivorous birds differently. In the Mediterranean region, intensification of olive orchards may benefit frugivorous birds locally, but negatively impact the wider bird community. Increasing olive availability in intensive orchards has a positive effect on frugivorous bird abundance, while non-frugivorous species may suffer from intensification and landscape homogenisation.

Legacy effects of seed dispersal mechanisms shape the spatial interaction network of plant species in Mediterranean forests

Antonio J. Perea et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of seed dispersal by frugivores in shaping plant communities in Mediterranean forests. Spatial patterns across different life stages are driven by seed dispersal mechanisms and spatial self-thinning, with little evidence of negative interactions. This research suggests that combining spatial point pattern analysis with network analysis and species traits is a promising approach to understanding the processes underlying local diversity patterns.
