Beyond 'trees are good': Disservices, management costs, and tradeoffs in urban forestry

Lara A. Roman et al.

Summary: The provision of ecosystem services through urban greening often overlooks the potential disservices caused by trees. Understanding these disservices, as well as considering tradeoffs and the central role of human perception in interpreting ecosystem services and disservices, is crucial for sustainable urban forestry decision-making. Further research is needed to assess life cycle impacts, stakeholder decision-making, return-on-investment, and different framings of services and disservices in urban forestry.
