Determining the rotational orientation of directional deep brain stimulation electrodes using magnetoencephalography

Mevlut Yalaz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of different electrode configurations on the accuracy of determining the rotational orientation of the directional deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode. It was found that the horizontal electrode configuration provided the most accurate results compared to other possible configurations, while the vertical configuration had lower accuracy.

DBS electrode localization and rotational orientation detection using SQUID-based magnetoencephalography

Mevlut Yalaz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the accuracy of localization and rotational orientation detection of a directional DBS electrode using a state-of-the-art MEG scanner. Results showed that the electrode was localized with a mean accuracy of 2.2 mm and orientation was determined with a mean accuracy of 11 degrees, limited by the measurement precision of the MEG system. A future magnetic measuring system with higher precision may further improve accuracy in detecting location and orientation of a DBS electrode.

Reduced Programming Time and Strong Symptom Control Even in Chronic Course Through Imaging-Based DBS Programming

Florian Lange et al.

Summary: The study found that image-guided DBS programming can significantly reduce programming time in Parkinson's disease patients while maintaining similar levels of symptom control. Although both programming methods had similar clinical outcomes, image-guided programming was faster in time duration.

DiODe v2: Unambiguous and Fully-Automated Detection of Directional DBS Lead Orientation

Till A. Dembek et al.

Summary: Directional deep brain stimulation (DBS) leads are widely used, but determining their orientation accurately from postoperative CT scans is crucial. An enhanced algorithm based on center of mass shifts of directional markers compared to their expected geometric center was found to be the most reliable method for resolving orientation ambiguity in DBS leads. This DiODe v2 algorithm offers an automated solution for determining the orientation of directional DBS leads.

Investigation of Magnetoelectric Sensor Requirements for Deep Brain Stimulation Electrode Localization and Rotational Orientation Detection

Mevluet Yalaz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the minimum detection limit of a ME sensor for deep brain stimulation electrode positioning. Factors such as sensor bandwidth, stimulation amplitude, and measurement duration were found to influence the required LOD. By adjusting these factors, the LOD can be optimized for accurate electrode localization.

Evolution of MEG: A first MEG-feasible fluxgate magnetometer

Nikolay Koshev et al.

Summary: This article presents the first solid-state sensor feasible for magnetoencephalography (MEG) that operates at room temperature. The sensor is based on yttrium-iron garnet films (YIGM) and proves its concept through registering human alpha rhythm. All experiments are validated using optically pumped magnetometer, which is well-established for MEG.

Directional Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease: Results of an International Crossover Study With Randomized, Double-Blind Primary Endpoint

Alfons Schnitzler et al.

Summary: Published reports on deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease have been limited to small studies, but this study found that directional stimulation resulted in a wider therapeutic window compared to omnidirectional stimulation, and was preferred by both subjects and clinicians involved in the study.
