Oxytocin, cortisol, and cognitive control during acute and naturalistic stress

Shari Young Kuchenbecker et al.

Summary: This research investigated the impact of stress on the neurohormones cortisol and oxytocin in women, revealing that emotional stress leads to negative emotions, increased cortisol levels, and faster cognitive reactions. In addition, higher baseline oxytocin levels predicted greater positive emotions and better cognitive accuracy in women.

Submaximal Exercise Provokes Increased Activation of the Anterior Default Mode Network During the Resting State as a Biomarker of Postexertional Malaise in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Rakib U. Rayhan et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with ME/CFS showed increased spontaneous activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, the anterior node of the Default Mode Network, after exercise, while controls exhibited decreased activation in this region. Overall, controls had higher BOLD signals indicating reduced global cerebral blood flow in ME/CFS.

Disentangling the Molecular Mechanisms of the Antidepressant Activity of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature

Hans O. Kalkman et al.

Summary: Major depressive disorders are often associated with a deficiency in Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can lead to inflammation. Studies have shown that a high intake of fish, a major source of Omega-3 PUFAs, is linked to lower rates of depression. Research suggests that EPA, rather than DHA, plays a key role in the antidepressant effects of Omega-3 PUFAs. Understanding the specific pathways of EPA and DHA metabolism may provide insights into why EPA-rich Omega-3 PUFAs are more effective in treating depression.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Essentials of Diagnosis and Management

Lucinda Bateman et al.

Summary: Despite a lack of appropriate clinical guidance for ME/CFS, recent developments including new diagnostic criteria and the withdrawal of graded exercise and cognitive-behavioral therapy as treatment options show promise for improving the diagnosis and management of the condition. The increase in patients experiencing symptoms similar to ME/CFS after acute COVID-19 has brought more attention to the need for better understanding and treatment of ME/CFS.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids protect against inflammation through production of LOX and CYP450 lipid mediators: relevance for major depression and for human hippocampal neurogenesis

Alessandra Borsini et al.

Summary: The study indicates that EPA and DHA can exert antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects through specific metabolites. These effects are primarily mediated by LOX and CYP450 metabolites and have been validated in clinical experiments.

Dopaminergic brainstem disconnection is common to pharmacological and pathological consciousness

Lennart R. B. Spindler et al.

Summary: This study investigated the functional connectivity changes of the dopaminergic ventral tegmental area (VTA) and its relationship with consciousness alterations. The results suggest a neuromodulatory role of VTA in consciousness, highlighting the importance of the dopaminergic system in understanding macroscopic network alterations related to consciousness.
