Comparative Study on Efficacy of Sanitizing Potential of Aqueous Ozone and Chlorine on Keeping Quality and Shelf-life of Minimally Processed Onion (Allium Cepa L.)

Raouf Aslam et al.

Summary: This study compared the sanitizing effects of aqueous ozone, 100 ppm chlorine and water washing treatments on cut onion slices, finding that aqueous ozone treatment had a longer shelf life at ambient temperatures, while chlorine treatment had a longer shelf life under refrigerated conditions. Additionally, it was observed that optimized conditions of aqueous ozone were competitive in sanitizing efficiency compared to 100 ppm chlorine.

Effects of triclosan on the RedoximiRs/Sirtuin/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway in mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis)

Shuang Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transcriptional responses of Nrf2 and its downstream genes, sirtuins, and RedoximiRs in the livers of mosquitofish exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of TCS. Results showed that TCS induced oxidative stress in mosquitofish and modulated the antioxidant system through the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway. The study suggests potential profound effects of TCS on aquatic ecological safety via the RedoximiRs/Sirtuin/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway.

Effects of long-term exposure of Mytilus galloprovincialis to thiacloprid: A multibiomarker approach*

Alzbeta Stara et al.

Summary: This study found that Thiacloprid affected biochemical parameters, cell viability, antioxidant biomarkers, and lipid peroxidation in Mytilus galloprovincialis, as well as causing tissue damage. Due to its harmful potential and cumulative effects, Thiacloprid may pose a potential risk to nontarget aquatic organisms and human health. Further investigation is necessary to fully understand the extent of this risk.

Response of aquatic macroinvertebrates communities to multiple anthropogenic stressors in a lowland tributary river

Stefan-Adrian Strungaru et al.

Summary: This study assessed the response of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities to multiple anthropogenic stressors in a lowland river spanning from pristine sectors to densely populated urban areas. A bioassay procedure was developed to evaluate water and sediment quality, with macroinvertebrate organisms correlated with physicochemical parameters and pollutants. Significant changes in physicochemical parameters were found along a longitudinal gradient, with macroinvertebrates showing affinities for specific abiotic factors, highlighting their potential use as reliable ecological indicators.

Triclosan elicited biochemical and transcriptomic alterations in Labeo rohita larvae

Sunil Sharma et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant effects of Triclosan on biochemical parameters and gene expression in Labeo rohita larvae, with certain biomarkers like glucose, triglycerides, urea, uric acid, and alkaline phosphatase showing significant declines after exposure. Some parameters showed opposite trends during the recovery period, suggesting their importance in identifying the health status of fish under TCS stress.

Aqueous ozone sanitization of whole peeled onion: Process optimization and evaluation of keeping quality during refrigerated storage

Raouf Aslam et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that optimizing aqueous ozone sanitization parameters can improve the shelf life of onions, such as reducing microbial load, maintaining good quality, and overall acceptability. Compared to water-washed and chlorinated treatments, ozone-treated onions showed a longer microbial shelf life and retained better quality attributes during storage.

ABC proteins activity and cytotoxicity in zebrafish hepatocytes exposed to triclosan

Nicole Soares Guidony et al.

Summary: This study revealed that triclosan is cytotoxic to zebrafish hepatocytes, causing impaired mitochondria function, plasma membrane rupture, and increased apoptosis, while also inhibiting ABC proteins activity. Molecular docking showed high affinity between triclosan and tested ABC proteins, particularly with ABCC2.
