One-pot production of lactic acid from rice straw pretreated with ionic liquid

Neerja Yadav et al.

Summary: This study successfully produced second generation lactic acid from rice straw using imidazolium ionic liquid pretreatment, fermentation with Lactobacillus plantarum SKL-22 strain, and cellulase saccharification. By optimizing the medium, the lactic acid yield was increased, and scaling up in a 5 L bioreactor resulted in a 1.11% yield increment. Overall, the study demonstrated the potential of L. plantarum SKL-22 to produce lactic acid from rice straw hydrolysate in an environmentally friendly manner.

Promotion of polylactic acid biodegradation by a combined addition of PLA-degrading bacterium and nitrogen source under submerged and soil burial conditions

Yeiangchart Boonluksiri et al.

Summary: This study investigated an efficient process for accelerating polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradation using bioaugmentation and biostimulation. Results showed that the addition of soytone significantly increased PLA weight loss and lactic acid content, indicating its effectiveness as a nitrogen source. The combination of soytone and P. geniculata WS3 in soil burial conditions resulted in nearly complete PLA degradation within 60 days.
