Effects of gravel content and shape on shear behaviour of soil-rock mixture: Experiment and DEM modelling

Yongsheng Yao et al.

Summary: The study found that gravel shape has a greater impact on the shear strength of soil-rock mixture (SRM) than gravel content, and the discrete element method can accurately predict the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of the material. As gravel content increases, the contribution of contact force within gravel particles increases, and the interlocking work has a nonlinear positive correlation with the increase of sphericity.

Numerical simulation of the moisture migration of unsaturated clay embankments in southern China considering stress state

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: Experimental and simulation studies have shown that vertical stress has a significant effect on the moisture distribution in unsaturated clay embankments in southern China. When analyzing moisture distribution, a finite element model considering SDSWCCs should be selected. Existing clay embankments in southern China show an increase in moisture content, decrease in resilient modulus values, and a significant decrease in slope safety factor.

A fractional elasto-viscoplastic model for describing creep behavior of soft soil

Fengxi Zhou et al.

Summary: This research applies fractional calculus theory to improve the elastic-viscoplastic model based on the overstress theory, proposes a fractional strain rate model, and solves the analytical solution of the fractional creep model using Laplace integral transformation. The results demonstrate that the fractional model is more accurate in predicting the creep behavior of soil such as soft clay compared to the traditional integer model.

Stress-dependent water retention of granite residual soil and its implications for ground settlement

Yongsheng Yao et al.

Summary: The experimental results showed that the applied vertical stress decreased the retained water content by up to 13% when the suction was less than 200 kPa. The numerical results indicated that considering the influence of stress on water retention could predict a higher ground heave and a larger ground settlement, compared with the conventional method without stress effects. This study implied that the method employed in the present study was more scientific and conservative for assessing ground settlement in pavement engineering.

A new method of assessing the stability of anti-dip bedding rock slopes subjected to earthquake

Yun Zheng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to evaluate the stability of ABRS under seismic actions, showing that ABRS is more likely to undergo shear and flexural toppling failures under the combined action of earthquakes and gravity. The direction of earthquake-induced inertial force, tensile strength of rock layers, and shear strength of joints significantly affect the stability of ABRS.

Study on the Triaxial Unloading Creep Mechanical Properties and Damage Constitutive Model of Red Sandstone Containing a Single Ice-Filled Flaw

Ren-liang Shan et al.

Summary: The freezing method is an effective approach for constructing coal mine shafts through water-rich soft rock strata. However, frozen fissured rock masses may experience damage or creep deformation over time under in situ stress during excavation unloading, leading to significant deformation, cracking, and instability of the frozen rock wall. A new nonlinear creep damage model of frozen fissured red sandstone was proposed based on fractional calculus theory and damage theory, which can reasonably describe the creep deformation of frozen rock masses under unloading conditions and provide important references for stability assessments.
