Observations of breakage for transversely isotropic shale using acoustic emission and X-ray computed tomography: Effect of bedding orientation, pre-existing weaknesses, and pore water

Guanyi Lu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the mechanical behavior of Marcellus shale specimens under different loading directions in dry and saturated conditions. The results showed a significant impact of pore water and pre-existing weaknesses on the samples, with tensile microfracturing being the dominant crack type. Additionally, local stress fluctuations were found to strongly influence fracturing, leading to cracks opening in areas nominally under compressive stress.

Damage progression and acoustic emission in brittle failure of granite and sandstone

Xiao-Ping Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally evaluates stress-induced damage progression and acoustic emission in granite and sandstone based on continuous acousto-optic-mechanical observations. Mechanistic correlations among the AOM characteristics in the two rock types are also investigated in detail. The results show significant differences in the AE event rate characteristics and acoustic-optical evidences for process zone nucleation between granite and sandstone.
