Mechanistic insights into Candida biofilm eradication potential of eucalyptol

P. Gupta et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Eucalyptol has anti-biofilm activity against Candida strains, affecting biochemical components and enzyme activity. Additionally, Eucalyptol influences cell cycle, mitochondrial membrane potential, ROS generation, and transcriptional expression of selected genes.

What do we know about the biology of the emerging fungal pathogen of humans Candida auris?

Gustavo Bravo Ruiz et al.

Summary: Candida auris is a fungal pathogen that emerged only a decade ago, and research has focused on understanding its virulence, antifungal resistance, biofilm formation, and interaction with human hosts. Despite some progress, there is still much to learn about this novel pathogen and the development of molecular tools is crucial for further understanding its genetic characteristics and mechanisms of survival.

Spread of Carbapenem-Resistant Gram-Negatives and Candida auris during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Critically Ill Patients: One Step Back in Antimicrobial Stewardship?

Laura Magnasco et al.

Summary: The risk of colonization/infection with CRPA, C. auris, and CR-Kp is higher among COVID-19 patients, with significant spread of resistant pathogens observed. Dedicated strategies are necessary to prevent spread and maintain effective antimicrobial stewardship programs in the setting of COVID-19 care.

Transcription Factors of CAT1, EFG1, and BCR1 Are Effective in Persister Cells of Candida albicans-Associated HIV-Positive and Chemotherapy Patients

Elham Aboualigalehdari et al.

Summary: The study found that BCR1, CAT1, and EFG1 genes were significantly higher expressed in persister isolates of Candida albicans producing biofilms compared to non-persister isolates. The most crucial factor in the production of persister cells was identified to be biofilm binding and production, rather than biofilm development. Catalase also played an essential role in the production of persister cells in C. albicans biofilm producers by detoxifying ROS.

Fungal Biofilms as a Valuable Target for the Discovery of Natural Products That Cope with the Resistance of Medically Important Fungi-Latest Findings

Estefania Butassi et al.

Summary: The development of new antifungal agents targeting biofilms is urgently needed, with natural products being a valuable source. Research has focused on essential oils, propolis, plant extracts, and more to modulate fungal biofilms, but further studies are needed to evaluate the effects on various fungal species, mechanisms of action, and in vivo testing.
